    A brief history of Joy and her family: Joy Lynn Robinson was born on January 16, 1955 in Portales New Mexico to Lanice Bruce Robinson and Anna Geneva (Chapman) Robinson. She was the youngest of four children born to Bruce and Anna. Roy Dan was the eldest child and first son born to Bruce and Anna on July 31, 1946 in Tampa Florida. Roy Dan was also the first child to pass on due to an accident on June 26, 1965 in Port Townsend Washington. Allan Dwayne was the second child born to Bruce and Anna in 1949. Robin Lee was the third child born to the Robinson family in 1953. L. Bruce Robinson passed on September 22, 2001 in Topeka Kansas. The remaining family members, Anna, Allan and Robin all continue to reside in the area of Topeka Kansas.

    L. Bruce Robinson was born October 18, 1920 in Smithville Tennessee. He served in the Air Force in the 1940s and was discharged as an officer in 1947. It was during this period of Bruce's life that he met and married Anna G. Chapman on August 15, 1945 in Tampa Florida. He went through the Air Force College Training Detachment and then studied aeronautical science and meteorology at the University of Tennessee. He later graduated from George Peabody College in Nashville Tennessee with a master's degree in music in 1951. Bruce was a high school band director in Crossville Tennessee and Portales New Mexico. Bruce Robinson began a career in 1957 with the Horace Mann Insurance Company of Santa Fe New Mexico during which he served the company for over 30 years in locations such as Albuquerque New Mexico, Portland Oregon and finally in Topeka Kansas. He retired from the firm in 1990.

    When Bruce and Anna Robinson moved to Topeka Kansas in 1968 with their family, they first lived at 3121 SW Briarwood Circle. During this period of her life, Joy attended Jardine Junior High at 2600 SW 33rd Street (now called Jardine Middle School). Prior to 1968, Joy had attended grade schools in both Albuquerque New Mexico and Portland Oregon. Joy was always an excellent student and to our knowledge was an endearing classmate to those who knew her. Upon their arrival in Topeka, the Robinson family placed membership with the Central Church of Christ at 1250 SW College Avenue in Topeka and have remained faithful members to this day. This is where many of us first met Joy and her wonderful family. Later, Joy would attend Topeka West High School at 2001 SW Fairlawn. Sometime in the early 1970s, the Robinson family moved out to 3654 SE Tomahawk Drive in the Lake Jivaro community of Tecumseh. It was during this period that Joy attended and in the spring of 1973 graduated from Shawnee Heights High School at 4201 SE Shawnee Heights Road in Tecumseh.

    Joy's older brothers Allan and Robin had attended Abilene Christian College (now ACU) from 1967 to 1977. So it was natural that Joy would attend from 1973 to 1975. At some point in 1976 we believe Joy became engaged to be married, though we do not know the young man's name. In 1976 she remained in Topeka where she was employed as the assistant manager of the SE 6th and SE Croco Road E-Z Shop.

     On Saturday October 16 1976, a sunny afternoon slightly after 2 P.M. an automobile accident took the life of Joy Lynn Robinson. The accident occurred near the intersection of SE 22nd and SE Shawnee Heights Road one mile south of US-40. The two teenage occupants of the other vehicle (a gold 1976 Dodge van) sustained only minor injuries in the head on collision with Joy’s vehicle (a white on red 1969 Ford two door Falcon). We do not know the reason why Joy momentarily lost control of her car on that fateful hill and veered into oncoming traffic. She was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Topeka where the pronouncement of her death was issued. Her memorial service was held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home (Mid-Town Chapel) at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, October 19, 1976. Joy Lynn Robinson lies in state with her beloved family members in Mount Hope Mausoleum, 4700 SW 17th, between SW Fairlawn Road and SW Gage Boulevard in Topeka.
